Homemade Applesauce

A high-fiber, nutrient-dense breakfast, snack, or freeze-able item for later!

Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (peeled, cored, and cut into chunks)

  • 1/2 cup water (adjust as needed; start with 1/4 cup for softer apples)

  • Juice of 1/2 lemon

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (adjust to taste)

  • 1 tablespoon honey (if desired)

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and cut apples into even-sized chunks.

  2. Combine Ingredients: Place apple chunks in a medium saucepan. Add water, lemon juice, cinnamon, salt, and honey (if using). Stir to coat the apples evenly.

  3. Cook the Apples: Cover the saucepan with a lid and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat for 30-45 minutes. Reduce the heat to maintain a low simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  4. Mash the Apples: Use the back of a wooden spoon to mash the apples to your desired consistency. For a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender.

  5. Cool and Store: Allow the applesauce to cool to room temperature. Store in jars in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze for defrosting later.
